Fort Gordon Opens Cyber Center of Excellence

Fort Gordon is on the verge of becoming the headquarters for Cyber Command. At the end of 2013, The Army announced its plans to consolidate Army Cyber Command operations into a 179,000 square foot facility at Fort Gordon near Augusta. When the move is complete it will generate nearly 4,000 jobs and spark revenue growth for the metropolitan area.

Already, exciting changes are happening at Fort Gordon. Last week, the Army hired two new commandants, Colonel Thomas Pugh and Colonel Jennifer Buckner. Pugh will be the new Signal Commandant while Buckner steps up to be the first ever Cyber Commandant. These two highly qualified individuals will be responsible for leading the post during these crucial transitional periods.

In addition to the new leadership, Fort Gordon cut the ribbon on the new Cyber School Headquarters building that will train students for the new operational positions. It is exciting to think that thousands of military personnel will pass through Fort Gordon to learn how to become a cyber soldier. These warriors of today will work to protect the United states from the unseen threats on the web and beyond.

“Augusta is going to be the Silicon Valley for Army cyber security,” said retired Col. Thom Tuckey, executive director of the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon.

In the next 6-12 months, we can expect to see the Cyber Center of Excellence come to life as more cyber soldiers join the ranks here at Fort Gordon.
