Whether it be emissions or their use of landfills, Aiken and Edgefield County industries are doing all they can do to reduce their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment. Last year, the city of North Augusta and the state of South Carolina came together to aide in their efforts by opening a Park and Ride for the commuters of the community.
Just off exit five on I-20 west/U.S Hwy 25 in North Augusta, South Carolina is the new Park and Ride facility. The 1.6 million dollar community amenity is located on Austin Graybill Road and is now open for carpoolers of Aiken and nearby counties.
Lark Jones, mayor to the city of North Augusta said the Park and Ride was built primarily, “to encourage carpooling and wiser use of resources.” The city hopes the facility will improve air quality standards and address the aging and stress on roadways in South Carolina.
This federally-funded project is a result of nearly 7 years of hard work and the cooperation between city, local and state governments. It is the first project of its kind in Aiken County. Goals for the Park and Ride are to reduce traffic on major roads in the CSRA and reduce air pollution. Many believe this marks a step toward the future for Aiken County and represents a, “willingness to invest in projects that reduce mobile source emissions through voluntary actions,” said Jack Porter, of South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The 220-space Park & Ride will be a major asset for employees moving across state lines for work as it will give them a central meeting place to commute to work with a co-worker or several co-workers. Aside from reducing their carbon footprint, this ride sharing system will assist employees with fuel cost-savings.
Other ecological features of the new Park and Ride include a rain garden which benefits water quality and LED lighting, which will save energy and reduce maintenance costs. We at Bill Beazley Homes think the Park and Ride will serve as a great example for other local communities to work together to create projects such as these that benefit the community.
