How To Choose the Right School in Aiken County School District

These days finding a “great school” means doing your homework, but what is it exactly that makes a school “great” to begin with?

Turns out a “great school” can mean a lot of different things. Some will boast of their academic test scores, while others will claim low teacher to student ratios. As with most matters of parenting, you’ll need to decide which one meets the needs of your family best. This will depend on what type of learner your child is and what you want from your school. Kids often have strikingly different learning styles. Some are visual, some learn better in groups, and some simply learn best by doing. While no school caters entirely to one kind of learner, you may be able to find a school whose approach works better for your child.

If you are moving within the Aiken County school district and are currently on the look out for a great school, here are three things to look for.

How To Choose the Right School in Aiken County School District

The Basics

The basics of a school are simple and traditional, and are often the easiest to find. You’ll want to look into how big the average class sizes are, what the student-to-teacher ratio is, and how well students score on tests. The attendance rate can also be illuminating as a high attendance rate indicates a positive school culture in which the staff, students and parents are all committed to success.

Holistic Education

how to choose a school

In addition to academics, you might also be looking for a school that cultivates moral, emotional, physical, and psychological aptitudes.

Be on the look out for schools that teach empathy, self-motivation, and emotional intelligence. Programs such as these equip students with life skills proven to foster success, and build flexible students who can  successfully interact with all kinds of people.

21st Century Skills

21st century skills

To prepare students for tomorrow’s multinational, rapidly changing workforce, a greater emphasis is now being placed on expansive ideas and creative thinking rather than rote memorization. These 21st century skills are essential to the success of a student because they foster problem solving skills, collaboration, leadership, communication, and independence.

While 21st century learning might be difficult to see on a morning walk-through, schools that foster 21st century learning will most likely have highly developed music programs, team sports, extracurricular clubs, and other activities that develop students’ diligence, creativity, and critical thinking.

What’s best for your family?

Now that you know what to look for, you will want to see the school for yourself to find out what is really best for your family. Nowadays, you can search for schools on an app on your smartphone device. However, nothing beats visiting the school in person to really get a sense of the school’s “vibe”. Visit in the morning and speak with the principal or a few of the teachers if possible. Then take a tour while teaching is in progress to see how the learning is taking place. Are they equipping students with the skills and experiences that will lead to a broader definition of success?

Remember the “best” schools in town, may have problems with overcrowding or waitlists. So look around and visit as many as possible. The school that is perfect for your child may have a phenomenal music program but lack the high test score reputation.
