December 13th is National Hot Cocoa Day. What better way to spend a cold December afternoon than snuggled up with a luxurious blanket and a large mug of hot chocolate? Putting on a holiday movie by the fire will pull the moment together.
In honor of National Hot Cocoa Day, we have compiled a list of our favorite hot chocolate recipes:
Classic Hot Chocolate
For a rich and simple chocolate taste, mix ¼ cup cocoa powder, ½ cup granulated sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt in a saucepan. Boil with ⅓ cup of water for 1 minute, then stir in 4 cups whole milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. This recipe fills 5 mugs!
Pumpkin White Hot Chocolate
This is a good fall-to-winter transition flavor. The bold pumpkin aroma mixed with a smooth white chocolate is a perfectly cozy mix. For this recipe, mix 1 can pumpkin puree, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 4 cups whole milk and 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice in a saucepan until it comes to a simmer. Stir in white chocolate chips and top with extra chips and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice, if desired.
Candy Cane Hot Chocolate
Peppermint and chocolate is always a good go-to flavor combination for the holidays. This recipe calls for 4 cups milk, 4 crushed candy canes and 3 ounces of dark chocolate in a saucepan over medium heat until the chocolate and candy have melted. Do not allow the mixture to come to a boil; just continue stirring vigorously until blended. This recipe covers 4 servings. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, crushed candy cane pieces and a candy cane stirring stick for a picture perfect mug.
Red Velvet Hot Cocoa
This one is definitely an “Instagram-worthy” recipe due to its beautiful color for the holidays. It also creates a single serving that can be easily multiplied for guests! Heat 1 cup of milk over medium heat and stir in ½ cup chopped chocolate. Add 1 ½ tsp of red food coloring and 1 tsp vanilla. For a whipped topping, combine ¼ cup heavy cream, 1 tbsp powdered sugar and ½ tsp vanilla, topping with chocolate shavings. Yum!
