What’s a GFCI?
What’s a GFCI?

August 23, 2021

Are you a new or future homeowner who gets overwhelmed by new terms? Is GFCI one of them? No worries, it’s actually not as daunting as you may think.

Ground fault circuit interrupters are commonly referred to as GFCIs, or special outlets that minimize the danger of electrocution in your home. These outlets are normally placed by sources of water such as near sinks or the garage and have the two red and black rectangular buttons in the middle that not all of your outlets will have. They are not to be mistaken as a fuse, which is simply in place to protect a structure itself from electrical fires. The GFCI is actually integrated into the outlet itself to monitor the amount of power going to the device plugged in.

They are designed to know if the electrical current is flowing the wrong way and automatically take action by shutting off the voltage. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, they are an important defense against shocks and electrical fires that may be caused by issues such as insulation failures, damaged appliances and overloaded extension cords.

If you have ever noticed an appliance shutting off for no apparent reason, the GFCI’s maximum current may have been exceeded. This is usually referred to as “tripping out” and you may have encountered it while drying your hair or having every outlet loaded on a power strip. To fix this, you can simply press the red reset button.

GFCI outlets do wear out eventually, so test them at least once per month. To test them, press the reset button and plug in a small device such as a night light. It should turn on. Then, press the test button to see if the power is immediately cut. When you press reset again, your device should turn back on. This means the outlet works the way it is supposed to. If the light does not turn on, the GFCI may not be properly installed and should be replaced or repaired.

If there are any issues concerning the GFCI outlets in your home, contact an electrician to safely test and inspect them for you.

International Lefthanders Day
International Lefthanders Day

August 13, 2021

Friday, August 13 is International Lefthanders Day! Are you a leftie or do you know someone who is? Being left handed is not so common- only 10% of the population is left handed. Unfortunately, many companies forget that not everyone is right handed. What do you do when you’re left handed and can’t find what you need to perform everyday tasks? Or do you know of anyone who could use a fun gift that’s left handed? Here are a few recommendations on where to shop and what to buy for the left hander in your life.

Lefty's the Left Hand Store is a San Francisco-based business that has been dedicated to serving left handers since 1978. They offer products such as left-handed pens, scissors, measuring cups, knives, garden tools and much more. They also have fun novelty items such as shirts and signs for left handers.

The Strategist has compiled a list of gadgets made specifically for left handers. It includes left-handed measuring cups, pens, journals, coffee mugs and more.

Readers Digest also has a list of their 13 favorite products for left handed people. Can openers, corkscrews, and keyboards are a few among the list that may not be thought about otherwise, but are readily available for the lefties who need them.

Here are a few interesting facts about left handers in honor of Left Handers Day:

  • A study has found that left handed people are twice as likely to experience migraines as right handed people.
  • Our brains are cross-wired, which means the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa. Because of this, it is believed that left handed people use the right side of their brain the most.
  • Lefties tend to excel in one-on-one sports such as tennis and boxing.
  • A few notable left-handed celebrities include Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.
  • Some of the world’s most innovative thinkers - Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, and Albert Einstein - were all left-handed.

2019 Interior Design Trends
2019 Interior Design Trends

August 2, 2021

Each year, home design experts gather to create predictions for trends that will lead the way in interior decorating. This year, there is a large focus on bold and artistic. We have compiled some of the predictions from industry experts on what is in for 2019.  Focal BacksplashBacksplash that stretches from the counter to the ceiling is a big kitchen trend to look out for. A bright, crisp tile selection that is laid on a large surface area creates a dramatic, clean and cohesive look.  Dark and Moody ColorsEven though “Living Coral” was named Pantone’s 2019 color of the year, many experts are leaning towards more dark colors to decorate the home and leaving brighter hues for accents. Gone are the days of navy or dark green walls being avoided; this year, they are in full force. Surprisingly, the colors can create a warm and serene setting and are a pleasant shift from the white/neutral shades that have dominated in design for many years.  Black KitchensThe white kitchen trend is out, especially from a logistical standpoint. They can seem impossible to keep clean with children and pets constantly running around. This year, experts are seeing black paint in kitchen cabinets and islands. It looks extra sophisticated when paired with gold or brass fixtures and marble countertops. Room DividersOpen concept floor plans continue to increase in popularity and with that, so do statement room dividers. They add visual interest to a room without making it feel cramped and can be easily moved to fit the homeowner’s needs.  Textured WallpaperWallpaper is rising from its 80s-90s grave and making a comeback this year. It elevates any room and minimizes the need for extra decor. This can be a scary choice to make when designing a room, so try it in a smaller space first before committing. A guest bathroom or office would be the perfect place to experiment.

The Joy of Downsizing
The Joy of Downsizing

August 2, 2021

Did you purchase your “dream home” only to realize you’re not actually living the dream? Whether you have retired and bought the house just because you could, or you’re a young couple trying to “keep up with the Joneses”, you may feel like you’re in over your head with a large home. The minimalist movement as well as financial trends suggest that less truly can be more. See what some of the benefits can be of downsizing your home:  Spend less time cleaning and maintaining. This is a huge one, especially for the retirees or elderly who don’t need all of the space. Having a larger home can be more difficult to keep up with. If you are thinking of moving into a smaller home, you will have less to maintain and the cleaning process will be much easier. Families young and old can spend more time enjoying each other’s company as opposed to cleaning every available minute.  There’s less space to accumulate “stuff”. With the growing minimalism trend, many Americans are getting rid of things they no longer want or need. It’s been proven that buying a larger home tempts the owner to fill it with more stuff for the sole purpose of occupying space. With a smaller home, you can be much more mindful of the space you have and only fill it with things you need and that make you happy.  Closer quarters create better community. A smaller space will encourage families and friends to practice closeness. This is especially important for families with young children growing up in such a tech-driven world. You will be able to spark better conversation around the dinner table in your cozy dining room.  Your finances will thank you. Obviously, the biggest reason and motivator for downsizing is finances. Maybe you purchased a large home because you were so excited that a lender approved you for that amount, but after moving, it became difficult to manage the monthly budget. Moving into a smaller home will save costs all around, from mortgage to utility payments and everything in-between.  We offer many different floor plans to fit the specific needs of you and your family. If you’re wanting to stick with something bigger, we have many options for you as well! Take the time to consider what is best for you and we will be here to assist you in any way we can.

Backyard BBQ on a Budget
Backyard BBQ on a Budget

August 2, 2021

Hosting a cookout can be a fun and easy way to gather family and friends. Having a backyard BBQ is a staple during the summer, especially in the south. It is a relaxing time to have everyone together, share stories and create new memories all while enjoying some delicious food. If you are wanting to have a backyard BBQ but the budget is tight, don’t worry! There are plenty of tips and tricks to making your cookout one to remember without breaking the bank.  Use cheaper cuts of meat. You don’t have to get the best beef tenderloin or ribeye steak to have a yummy meal. Lesser known cuts, like chuck roast or sirloin flap, can be just as delicious with the right seasoning and marinade for the grill. Try chicken thighs instead of breasts- they hold flavor better, too!  Create a gourmet hamburger and hot dog buffet. A little bit can really go a long way here, and your guests will like the option to customize their plates. Buy a large package of hot dogs and/or burger patties from your local grocery store or bulk warehouse and create a spread of various toppings on a table. Think beyond your typical ketchup, mustard and horseradish- try sriracha mayonnaise, barbecue ketchup, pickled vegetables, bacon, shredded cheese, or even guacamole!  Try an outdoor taco party. Tacos are an easy way to make your meat go further and get more bang for your buck. With taco trucks and restaurants increasing in popularity, take some inspiration from their menus and create something a step above the usual taco. Gather ingredients like pulled pork or chicken for a delicious barbecue taco- guests can’t fit as much meat into a tortilla as they would a sandwich bun, so you can make it last longer and entertain more people! Don’t worry about feeling like you’re skimping. Guests will love the idea and be just as satisfied with the food.  Keeping up with the kebabs…A great way to showcase different ingredients inexpensively is by grilling some delicious kebabs for your guests. You could even lay the ingredients out buffet-style for them to stack their own and let you grill! All you need is a good meat base and a few different fruits and veggies.  Hosting a backyard BBQ does not have to be intimidating or expensive. Feel free to suggest that your guests bring sides or desserts to help lighten your load as well. Remember to look for the best deals on all of your ingredients and search for coupons, too!

What to Know About Smart Lightbulbs
What to Know About Smart Lightbulbs

July 30, 2021

Move over, LED bulbs - smart light bulbs are the newest trend in home lighting. They add a convenience factor by being able to control them from your phone as well as better energy conservation. Here’s everything you need to know before shopping for smart bulbs for your home:  Hub or No HubA hub is a device that connects to your wireless router at home. Some smart lights require this connection to be able to control them from your phone or smart device. An easy key to know if the bulbs need a hub would be if you see “Zigbee” or “Z-Wave” on the packaging. If you purchase bulbs that don’t require a hub, you’ll just need to connect them to your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Wi-Fi bulbs tend to be a bit more reliable whereas Bluetooth would only work from your phone within a specific range. If your house is larger, a Wi-Fi connected set may be better.  White or Color-ChangingClassic white smart bulbs still come with the ability to dim at different levels, but color-changing lights supply some extra mood lighting if you want more. They can amplify a themed party or be used for notifications with alarms.  How Smart Are Smart Bulbs? By controlling your lightbulbs from your phone, you can create a setting for the light by your door to be a certain color depending on the weather. For example, you can set it to turn blue if you’ll need a raincoat. You can also configure the lights to turn on automatically when you get home so that you’re not fumbling in the dark to find a light switch. Not a morning person? Set the lights in your bedroom to gradually increase, simulating a natural sunrise for easier waking. The possibilities can be endless when you make the switch to smart light bulbs and discover everything you can do right from your phone.  Not only do smart bulbs help save energy, they can be fun to use and cost-efficient as well. Decide what will work best for your home and enjoy your new smart light bulbs!
