Homemade Apple Cider

If you’re looking for a sweeter fall alternative to the pumpkin spice latte, a glass of fresh apple cider is the way to go. The aroma of a crisp, fresh apple warmed to perfection is almost unmatched. Never made your own cider before? Here’s an easy recipe to try this fall.
Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
- Fresh apples, any variety
- Oranges for a citrusy addition to the cider
- Sweetener, such as brown sugar or maple syrup
- Cinnamon sticks
- Water for the base of the cider
The tools you’ll need are a fine mesh strainer to drain the juices out after the cider is finished, a potato masher to mash the apples, and a slow cooker or Stockpot to make the recipe in.
To make a stovetop apple cider, combine all of your ingredients into a stockpot. Cover with about two inches of water and be sure to leave an inch or two of space at the top of the stockpot.
Heat the mixture over high heat until you reach a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer covered for about 2 hours. Then, mash the fruits with your potato masher and cover again to let it simmer for a little while longer.
Next, strain the mixture with a fine mesh strainer. Be sure to thoroughly press the solid foods against the strainer to release all of the juices and rich flavor. Stir in your desired amount of sweetener and serve warm.
For a slow cooker apple cider, combine all of the ingredients into a slow cooker pot and cover with water. Cook it on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours until the apples are completely soft. Then mash and strain the same way as you would for the stovetop recipe. Serve warm and garnish with cinnamon sticks or apple slices for presentation purposes.
Fresh apple cider is much better than premade items from the grocery store and there is a sense of accomplishment in knowing that you successfully tried a new recipe for anyone to enjoy. As a bonus, your home will smell divine after letting it simmer for so long!
