Whether you are new to the Augusta area or have been a long-time resident, everyone is familiar with the city being home to the prestigious Masters Golf Tournament at the highly-acclaimed Augusta National Golf Club. Every year, patrons travel to our small town from all over the world and crowd around Washington Road for the biggest event of the year in golf. We have gathered a brief history to educate you more on Augusta’s most wonderful time of the year.

Robert “Bobby” Jones, with the help of Clifford Roberts, acquired the land of Fruitland Nurseries in Augusta with the intention of transforming it into an exclusive golf club like no other he had previously played. The first tournament was played in 1934 has been held every year since with the exception of 1943, 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.

In 1937, members of the Augusta National Golf Club began wearing green sports coats to stand out among the crowd and be easily identified by patrons. The famous Green Jacket was first awarded in 1949 to player Sam Snead. While it was originally a thick, woolly status symbol, it has easily become one of the most iconic trophies to attain in sports. Masters champions have a temporary coat to wear during the award ceremony on Sunday based on measurement estimates and are later custom-fitted for their own.

If you have ever had the opportunity to visit the Augusta National, you know that the greenery and architecture is unlike anything else in our area. When players arrive on the grounds, they drive down the scenic Magnolia Lane for a dramatic 330-yard entrance covered by magnolia trees into the golf club. The clubhouse, which has been standing since before Bobby Jones purchased the land, is believed to be the first concrete house built in the South. The porch peers over the beautiful Founders Circle, a famous photo-op for patrons from all over. There are also a few members-only cabins on the grounds, including one that was built for former President and member Dwight D. Eisenhower.

This truly is a special time of year for the city of Augusta. Even non-golf fans appreciate the rich history and beauty of the Masters and it is an unforgettable experience. Even though traffic may get a little crazy during the week, show kindness and patience to all of the patrons visiting our area!
