Summer Reading: Local Authors

One of the best ways to relax during the summer is on the porch with a cup of coffee or iced tea and a good book to read. If there’s a nice morning breeze, it’s easy to get swept away in the story and forget about your troubles for the day. While there are plenty of great books on the national lists to purchase, why not go for a change of pace and look into some local authors from your own area? Here is a list of local authors and their books: 

 

Bill Baab, Remembering George W. Perry

Baab is the former outdoor editor and sports writer for the Augusta Chronicle. His book, Remembering George W. Perry, is an account of an angler who caught a world-record bass in 1932. The book brings out his quirky personality and life story before and after fishing fame. 

 

Lee Benedict, Freedom Heist: The Left’s Theft of Liberty

This book was written in 2013 by a former U.S. Army Sergeant who has gone on to work for local, state, and federal campaigns. Freedom Heist answers questions voters may have around election periods and gives historical context

 

Tripp Bowden, Freddie and Me: Life Lessons from Freddie Bennett, Augusta National’s Legendary Caddie Master 

Bowden is a former caddy for the Augusta National Golf Club who grew up forming an unusual bond via his father with Freddie Bennett. Bennett introduced Bowden to the game of golf on the world’s greatest course and taught him life lessons outside of the sport as well. It is the heartwarming tale of two unlikely friends. 

 

Charmain Zimmerman Brackett, Multiple Books

Brackett is an Augusta native who has written for the Augusta Chronicle for over 28 years. Her 2012 debut novel, The Key of Elyon, won an Augusta Literary Festival award for fiction in 2014. The Elyon series continues with two other publications, Elyon’s Cipher y Elyon’s Light: Lucy’s Call. She also received Georgia Author of the Year in 2015 for her childrens’ book, Little Pearl’s Circus World. Her latest project is an Augusta-based mystery series, Murder Under the Magnolias.

 

Maggie Brendan, Multiple Books

Maggie Brendan sports an impressive list of awards for her writings. She has multiple book series: Heart of the West, The Blue Willow Brides, Virtues and Vices of the Old West, y The Trouble with Patience.
