Are you a first-time homeowner needing to stock up on lawn equipment? Or maybe you’re a seasoned landscaper looking for an update. No matter what stage you’re in, shopping for a new lawn mower can be tedious with today’s abundance of information and multiple products. Here are the top things you should look for when you are ready to shop for a new mower.

Lawn Size

The size of your yard will determine whether a push mower will work or if you will need a riding mower. Generally, push mowers are perfectly effective for land sizes of ½ acre or less. If your yard is bigger than this, a riding mower will save you time and energy.

Power Supply

Lawn mowers are sold with power supplies of either gas or electricity. Gas mowers usually have more power and will last during the full mowing session. The downside to a gas mower is that maintenance can sometimes be more complicated. Cordless electric mowers are quieter and easier to start, but don’t run as long on a charge as a gas mower would. The third option, a corded electric mower, gives unlimited run time but there is a cord to keep up with while mowing.

Riding Mower

Riding mowers are popular among homeowners with larger yards. You can sit on top and steer them, allowing for more energy to complete the task. While riding mowers cover a larger area, they can be bigger and harder to store as well as more expensive. This is something to take into account when looking at your storage space and budget.

Push Mower

Push mowers require more effort, which is why they are better suited for smaller yards. It can be especially draining in the summer heat as pushing requires momentum and extra energy. However, they are significantly cheaper than riding mowers.

Self-Propelled Mower

A self-propelled lawn mower is similar to a push mower, but operates easier with less manpower. They have an engine that turns the wheels, releasing you from having to push the wheels around the lawn. Self-propelled mowers are a little pricier than the standard push style, but the ease of use may be worth a small increase.

These are just a few ideas and styles to consider when shopping for a mower. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from a sales associate at your local home & garden store. By knowing the factors to take into account from your own yard, they will be able to better assist you in making the best choice.
