Bike Trails in the CSRA

May 28, 2019

Tan Banner

The CSRA is home to some of the least expected but most challenging and beautiful biking trails in the southeast. As the warm weather fully ramps up, it’s a great time to take a breezy morning ride or an evening adventure with the family at dusk. There are roughly 150 miles worth of trails in our area, so take some time to check them out!

FATS (Fork Area Trail System)

Located in the Sumter National Forest in South Carolina, this epic 37 mile trail contains all of the loops and hills needed to get that mountain biking feel. The trail is wonderful for hiking too if you’d rather walk and take in the beautiful scenery. The Forks Area Trail System can be accessed from Augusta by taking Exit 1 off of I-20, then driving roughly 8 miles into Edgefield.

Mistletoe State Park

Mistletoe is definitely the most technical biking trail in our area. It wasn’t originally built for mountain biking, so there are creeks, rocks and climbs galore. The trails can be a bit confusing the first time too so make sure you have a map and maybe bring someone with previous experience. Mistletoe is a short drive away from Augusta in the Appling/Clarks Hill Lake area.

Stevens Creek (Modoc)

Just over the river in Modoc, South Carolina, the Stevens Creek trail has some of the best scenic views for a bike ride. The trail is only 6 miles out and back, making for a fairly easy trip with no shortage of exercise.

Bartram Trail

This beautiful biking spot can be found in your own backyard if you’re in the Evans area! It is 22.5 miles just one way, so definitely plan to make a day out of this if you want to experience the full trail. It stretches from Washington Road to Petersburg Campground, so it’s perfect to take a bike ride out to a campsite and spend an evening at the lake.

Canal Trail

Inside the city limits of Augusta, you’ll find a 2.8 mile loop between the Savannah River and Augusta Canal. It is a fairly smooth trail, but has plenty of twists and turns to look out for.
