The mountains are a peaceful getaway year-round. It is especially sensible to go in the summer whereas most people flock to them for the fall and winter. However, summertime mountain trips are still extremely fun and unique, and the higher altitude can give you a little break from the heat! Check out some of our favorite mountain road trip destinations:

Blue Ridge, Georgia

Blue Ridge is right around a 4 hour drive from the Augusta area, so it could be an easy day trip but may be worth spending a little extra to stay a night or two. There is nothing like a mountain sunrise and a great cup of coffee! Plan to enjoy a hike on the Appalachian Trail and rent a luxury cabin.

Helen, Georgia

Helen is the perfect escape year-round. The small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains has been a tourist destination inspired by Germany for the last 40 years. To get the full experience, Oktoberfest is a great time for a trip. However, you can taste and see everything Helen has to offer year-round. It’s just over 3 hours from the Augusta area!

Travelers Rest, South Carolina

This quiet, peaceful mountain town is just over 2.5 hours away from the CSRA. Travelers Rest earned its name in the 1800s when large, covered wagons carrying animals such as horses and sheep were being transported from Kentucky and Tennessee to South Carolina. It was considered an old-time “rest stop” and is now a great getaway. There is an abundance of local shops and restaurants as well as multiple state parks around the area for a good hike.

Dahlonega, Georgia

Bypass the hustle and bustle of Atlanta and plan your next trip for Dahlonega instead, site of the first U.S. Gold Rush and the heart of Georgia Wine Country. It is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and takes around 3 hours to drive to. You can experience historic tours and attractions, hike through the Chattahoochee National Forest and book a quiet lodge to stay overnight or for a weekend.

These are just a few of many options you have for an exciting summer trip to the mountains. Wherever you decide to go, take a ton of pictures and enjoy that cool mountain breeze!
