Planning Spring Gardens

Jan 31, 2022

While it may be cold out now, spring is just around the corner. Use the colder days to plan how you intend to revive your garden this spring- the advanced thinking will pay off once it’s warm enough to dig into the soil again.

  • Make sure all of your gardening tools are in good condition. Check each one and replace any parts or pieces that may be broken or worn down.
  • Choose your location. If you plan on growing mostly vegetables, be sure to outline a sunny space for success. Flowers will need individual consideration depending on the amount of care and sunlight they need. Do your research now if you are planting anything new so that you are well prepared when it’s time to plant the seeds.
  • Draw a diagram of your garden plan. If you are a visual person, this is a necessity to helping your plans come to fruition. A simple sketch would work just to see where you intend to plant everything and adjustments can be made on paper much easier than in person.
  • Order the seeds you’ll need. If there are local nurseries or plant shops, check with them first to support small businesses. They may even be able to special order certain plants for you to be ready by spring.
  • Gather your pots and trays. If you discarded some last year or plan on adding new plants this year, be sure you have a full stock of all necessary pieces to get your planting started.
  • Grab an easy soil test kit if you need to test your soil for health. The winter weather may cause damage, so it is important to ensure the pH and nutrient levels are still there or purchase new soil before beginning.
  • Check your garden area for hibernating pests. This will save a great deal of trouble by the time spring is here so that you can add a pest control solution and give it time to work.

By taking preventative steps and planning ahead, your garden will be ready to bloom bright this spring.
