The warm weather is finally here to stay for the next few months. Since spring has officially sprung, why not try out your green thumb and create a mini herb garden? This is a perfect step for beginners or those who are trying to save space but still want to enjoy planting. Herbs have an amazing smell and a variety of uses for cooking. Think about roasting a nice lamb with rosemary or placing basil on a bed of mozzarella.

With gardening techniques constantly evolving, creating your own miniature herb garden is easier than ever. There are tips galore on curating the perfect setting for herbs to grow and we have compiled a few here to get you started.


Start with the basics.

Some of the most popular basics to begin your herb garden with are basil, sage, oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary, parsley and cilantro. Pick a few or all of these to start out as they are easy to find as well. Check out any home and garden store in the area and experts will be happy to assist you in the selection process.


Pick your location.

Decide where you will want to start your herb garden. If you want to keep it inside and have easy access to them, the kitchen window is the perfect spot. You could also use a wall next to the kitchen window and use wall-hanging planters. The back porch is a great spot as well (but keep it elevated if there are young children or pets around).


Prepare for planting.

Once you have selected a spot for your herb garden, gather some small jars, pots or planting boxes and loosen the soil inside them. It is also a good idea to start early in the morning or late in the afternoon to lessen the chance of herbs wilting in the warmer midday sun.


Add your herbs.

Once you have your soil laid out, dig small planting holes to fit the root of the herb plant you are transplanting. Place taller herbs towards the back of the garden and the smaller ones in the front. Add labels to the herbs for easy identification once they sprout. Once the plants are established, be sure they get at least an inch of water each week to thrive. You’ll be able to harvest your herbs and use them wherever desired once they are mature.
