How to Christmas-Proof Your New Home During the Building Process

With the holidays around the corner, we are all getting decorations up and trying to get into that festive spirit. If you’re building a home, you may be holding off right now, but think about how this might work in your space next year. We’ve all lived in small, or even spacious homes that have frustrating elements: a lack of storage, no closet space, or an awkward bathroom layout. Well, when you’re working on building your own home, it’s your chance to make sure you have all the amenities you need. And when it comes to equipping your home to be a good spot for the holidays, there are some steps you can take during the home-building process.

• Talk to your builder about outlet locations

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to make interior design choices and feeling like maybe you found the perfect place for the lamp, only to discover there isn’t an outlet nearby. Decorating for Christmas heightens this feeling, as we tend to start hanging lights around windows, plugging in decorations, and setting up our trees in places where maybe we don’t normally have outlets. Try to anticipate this issue as you build and ask for outlets in all the places where you foresee hanging lights or plugging in décor. To make an even bigger statement, see if your builder can include a large window near the designated tree spot so that your house can look lit up from the outside.

• Install hooks or clips for decorations you love

If you know you love stockings and garland, have your builders install little metal hooks in important areas so that when the holidays roll around, you’ll be able to simply hang and go. Last-minute solutions like tape and sticky hooks can damage your walls or wood surfaces, so try to avoid these by having permanent fixtures.

• Set aside storage for decorations

As lovely as it is to have a home full of decorations around the holidays, they only stay up for a couple of months. This means that for most of the year, your items will be in storage. So, make sure you have space for all of that storage. Work with your builder to maximize your attic and closet spaces, with a designated area to tuck away bins full of holiday decorations.

• Include a power pantry and large dining room to make hosting easier

If you love having family over and are the go-to household for gatherings, you need to make sure the floorplan of your house is suited to hosting. This means having a large dining area that fits and seats a large table. It also means having the kitchen space to cook for a group; consider building a power pantry that makes it easier to shop and store in bulk as you prepare for a large group meal.

• Make the most of your fireplace

We already mentioned hooks for stockings, but those hooks are useless if you don’t have a fireplace to hang them over. Designate this central area—whether you have a working fireplace or not—because you’ll want a central hearth in the home that pulls together the living area into a cozy gathering spot and gives the feeling of a luxury home. Then, come December, there’s a perfect place to hang stockings.
